The Teachers
Gloria & Gio
Successfully trying to grow a Balboa scene in Barcelona area since 2005, Gloria has been dancing Balboa since 1998. Having developed her own training technique, she has been teaching internationally since 2010. Coming from various dancing backgrounds like afro-latin, traditional Spanish dances and solo jazz, she has won balboa International titles like Euro Bal Cup 2011, Balboa on the Promenade Classic Open 2013 and All Balboa Weekend PA 2014. Member and leader of White Chocolates solo jazz troupe, she has also been teaching locally Balboa and solo jazz since 2004. She is also a Dance Movement Therapist and uses various movement analysis techniques in her Balboa teaching methology.
Gio started dancing at the age of 10 and he never stopped. He travelled from the very beginning for Boogie Woogie competitions, later on he discovered Balboa which is now his great passion. He is currently based in Stockholm where he teaches regular classes and is part of the team organising Sweden Balboa Weekend. Gio enjoys experimenting with new moves and stretching the borders of the dance, many people remember him for his following skills. Gio still likes to compete, he won the first place title at All Balboa Weekend Amateur Strictly and Jack’n’Jill, Balboa on the Promenade Strictly and Jack’n’Jill and Snowball. His goal is to let the students develop their own style and character in the dance.
Montse & Alejandro
Montse and Alejandro have traveled around the most important festivals for years to perfect and create a distinctive style derived from energy and playful improvisation based on a great sense of musicality.
The cheerfulness they exude during social dances and the competitions they take part in make them unique. Their classes are dedicated to explaining the tools they have used to express themselves on the dance floor and create their own moves and variations. They have won and placed many times in international Balboa competitions around Europe and USA.
Workshop & Levels
We will offer 4 levels that each will enjoy 4 hours of class divided over 2 days. We will place you in a level based on a questionaire at registration. Anni Skoglund (Sweden) and Gašper Hrovat (Slovenia) are a wonderful and inspiring couple that will warm your heart. Their dance style is smooth and playful and is at its best dancing to live music when they focus on the joy between the musicians and themselves. They want to share their love for the dance as a form of communication without words, but with music, as the essence of dancing with body and soul.
Balboa History Dance Class
The history of balboa is mysterious and is still a well debated topic. Anni & Gašper will take you on a journey to explore the influences of the older dance styles that have contributed to the balboa as it came to be. To be clear, this is a dance class.
Friday night, 20-21 hrs/8-9 pm
Slow Balboa
Balboa dancers love it fast... and slow! Anni & Gašper are masters at a slow pace in close embrace. Let's sway around the floor to those lovely slow swing songs.
Saturday afternoon, 15:30-16:30 hrs/3:30 pm/4:30 pm
Extra: City Walk
Secret gardens, urban poetry, perfume and trains
Because you like it so much and we like it so much, we will add the city walk again to the weekend! Your timetravel guide Marly from Timeless Rotterdam Tours as quite some stories to tell about Rotterdam (aka Roffa). This year Marly thought it would be a lot of fun to take you on a surprising exploration through the Zomerhof quarter, conveniently located right around the corner of the workshop venue!
As you may have noticed on previous visits the area directly surrounding Cuartito Azul is an intriguing mishmash of old and new, common and weird, cosy and bold, green and graphic. During the last century this once quiet and peaceful 19th century residential neighbourhood changed drastically, from an area best avoided at night into the hip and happening hotspot it is today.
During the walk we’ll delve into the history of the Zomerhof quarter. You’ll hear the unexpected stories and visit some hidden corners you might otherwise have passed right by!
